Summary, Etc.This is where the law librarian comes in. He/She embraces not only academic law libarians, practice librarians, librarians in industry and commerce but also information officers and managers, documentalists and other suppliers of legal literature and refernce materials. Supposedly armed with an adequate and ample knowledge of law and its sources, he or she provides his or her expertise in legal bibliography and research. Those who wish to enter into law librarianship would discover that it would be almost impossible to do so without having at least a basic knowledge of the law itself. Furthermore, inadequacy or total lack of knowledge in the subject would jeopardize the basic aim of the library and the librarian in providing information and sources of information to the user in a timely and efficient manner
Law books and materials are in one way or another different considering that law is clearly a very specialized and technical field or subject matter. Thus, it would follow that it would require special skills, knowledge and training for an efficient and well-organized search to take place
Of the 300 clientele/users and 100 law librarians from different 20 law libraries all over Metro Manila, 100 percent responded. It was found out that there are still law librarians who are not adequately and sufficiently prepared and trained to serve their clientele. It was also determined that the strengths of the law librarians lay in their expertise in library practices but that their weaknesses resided in their lack of knowledge and background in legal research and bibliography. Both groups of respondents saw a need to set up standards or requirements in the field to enhance the quality of service and competence of the law librarians. It was thus proposed that a law librarian should either have a bachelor's degree, a master's degree or a diploma in law librarianship, should have more than suffucient training in library management and legal bibliography, should be a licensed librarian, should attend seminars and trainings on or related to law librarianship and should become a member in an association or organization related to the profession
This study was an investigation and an evaluation of the performance and competency of the law librarians in the Philippines and it aimed to propose a set of standards and requirements in the field of law librarianship. Such a project aimed to improve the quality of service and of practice in law libraries, whether academic, private or corporate by helping librarians get into grips with the bibliographical complexity of legal material
