The VISCA Social Laboratory: its first year of experience (November 1975 to December 1976)
General Note
Baybay, Leyte: VISCA, 1977. 80p
Summary, Etc.
The report summarizes the accomplishments of the Social Laboratory (SL) based on its three functions: instruction, research and extension. Their activities were presented under three categories: institution building, specific projects, and cultural and informative activities. In institution building, the SL selected six barangays in Baybay, Leyte as direct recipients of its program. Group A consisted of Barangays San Isidro, Gacat and Kansungka, while Group B composed of Barangays Hibunawan, Maganhan and Igang. The SL improved and strengthened the Samahang Nayon and its credit assistance in these barangays. New organizations were also established, namely: Seed Growers' Association, Rural Women's Association, and Samahang Nayon Consumers' Cooperative. The success of the SL was made possible through the assistance of several agencies. The specific projects of the SL include road building and school room construction through the "Pintakasi" system, rural youth projects for out-of-school (rattan furniture making and backyard duckery) and for in-school youths (handicraft and simple rattan furniture making), and farm demonstration projects on corn and vegetable growing and on control of Biotype 2 brown planthopper. The cultural and informative activities include a harvest festival; inter-barangay sport competition; publication of the Extension Gazette, `Ang CES Balita', and a blackboard newspaper called Community Newsboard; and conduct of nonformal classes for the farmers (piglet castration, seed storage and proper vegetable growing), rural women (rootcrop processing, macrame bag making and home management), and the rural youth (leadership and citizenship trainings)
