Some factors associated with the rooting of rambutan (nephelium lappaceum linn.) cuttings under controlled mist. II. influence of media, girdling and varieties on rooting by J.S. Imlan and W.C. Kelly

Summary, Etc.
There were three sets of experiments in the second series principally aimed in investigating the effects of different media, girdling and varieties on the rooting responses of rambutan cuttings treated with two levels (50 and 100 ppm) of indolebutyric acid (IBA) rooted under controlled mist. In general, the mixtures were better than the sand and coconut coir dust alone but the mixture of Bay sand and coconut coir dust (BS+CD) was the best among the media used. It gave the highest percentage of survival of rooted cuttings. No difference in earliness to rooting of the different media but the treated cuttings rooted earlier than the control. In girdling experiment, the percentage of rooting, survival of rooted cuttings number and length of roots per cutting, were greater in the ungirdled than in the girdled one. Removal of the callus tended to decrease the percentage of rooting and survival of rooted cuttings. More starch and carbohydrate were found in the girdled cuttings than in the ungirdled ones, however, slightly more nitrogen was found in the former. In both both kinds of cuttings, girdled and ungirdled, more nitrogen was found in the leaves. The sweet variety had better percentage of rooting survival of rooted cuttings, more and longer roots and rooted earlier than the sour one
