Summary, Etc.
Isolates of the insect pathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill.and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok., were screened for virulence and tested under semi-field conditions against nymphs of the Oriental migratory locust, Locusta migratoria manilensis Meyen. The most virulent isolates against third instar nymphs were B. bassiana (Bb1(LT50 = 1.5 days) and M.anisopliae Fm11(LT50 = 5.1 days) in feeding assay using corn leaves contaminated with 10 to the 8th and 10 to the 7th conidia/ml aqueous suspension, respectively. When assayed at a density of 10 to the 8th conidia/ml, the LT50of Fm11 was reduced to 3.1 days. Based on the comparative assay, in which nymphs were topically inoculated with 1.5 x 10 to the 6th conidia/ml of aqueous suspension on the mouth parts or dorsal abdomen, Fm11 (LT50 = 6.1 days) was more virulent than the Bb1 (LT50 = 8.0 days). Both B. bassiana and M.anisopliae were found innocuous to nontarget organisms including honeybees, hymenopterous parasitoids, predatory beetles and bugs and earthworms. Isolate Fm11, formulated in coconut oil for ultra low volume spray or suspended in water for high volume spray and applied at 3.0 x 10 to the 12th conidia/ha resulted to 98%
