Physical Descriptionxvi, 151 figures, tables
Summary, Etc.This study utilized survey among seventy working mothers in two certified Mother-Baby Friendly Workplaces in Metro Manila to assess the level of utilization of lactation breaks. Majority of the working mothers were in their young adulthood stage with large portion of bachelor's degree graduates. Majority held non-managerial positions and worked in fixed work hour schedule. Meanwhile, both workplaces complied with R.A. No. 10028 through availability of written lactation policy, provision of lactation breaks, station and breastfeeding information, and compliance with the Milk Code. Findings showed that in general working mothers had average level of awareness on workplace lactation policy, how level of knowledge on breastfeeding and positive attitude towards breastfeeding. Working mothers perceived their organization to be less supportive of their breastfeeding whereas their supervisor and co-workers to be supportive. Only 18.6% of the working mothers exclusively breastfed their child from birth up to 6 months. On the other hand, less than half (47.1%) of the working mothers continued to breastfeed for 6 months and beyond. Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and continued breastfeeding for 6 months and beyond, perceived breastfeeding support from supervisor, and knowledge on and attitude towards breastfeeding were significantly associated with level of utilization of lactation breaks. In conclusion, only 30.0% of the working mothers had full utilization of lactation breaks. Therefore, it is recommended for the workplaces to improve the knowledge of working mothers on breastfeeding though conduct of breastfeeding information activities and to further improve the provision of R.A. No. 10028 by enhancing the support coming from supervisors
