$aThe pollution loads of wastewater samples from three small-scale HMP mills were analyzed, The spent liquor was found highly alkaline with exceedingly high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The pH of samples from the sheet forming process was near neutral, while their BDO, CDO and total suspended solids (TTS) varied with source. Treatment experiments were conducted on composite wastewater samples from one of the mills. Natural setting and passing the supernatant liquid through two aerated charcoal beds (ACB) for about five days each was, in general, sufficient to reduce BOD and TSS but not COD and color. This was the result whether the sample was a mixture of wastewater form pulping, bleaching and sheet forming or just from sheet forming. On the other hand, treatment of sheet forming wasterwater with alum as coagulant, then passing the supernatant liquid through one ACB for one to two days was sufficient to reduce the pollution loads to the standard limits set in DENR AO No. 35 for effluents that may be discharged into Class C bodies of water. Segregating the sheet forming and bleaching effluents from the pulping effluent appears to be practical approach in managing HMP mill effluents. Through segregation, the less polluted sheet forming and bleaching effluents can be treated and possibly recycled into the process. The pulping effluent has to be handled separately. Disposal on the ground is not recommended. The excess Na+ ions in the spent liquor will render the soil highly alkaline or sodic, a condition detrimental to plant growth.
