The study aimed: to trace and describe the development of the different machines at the University of the Philippines at Los Banos, Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (UPLB, INSAET) namely the flatbed grain drier, copra drier, solar drier, and arrowroot rasper; to find out the farmers' evaluative standards for acceptable farm machines; and to determine the working relationships between researchers, machine designers, manufacturers small farmers, and other end-users of the machines. The introduction of the high-yielding IR-8 rice variety which created some postharvest problems prompted the idea of developing a simple flatbed grain drier suitable during wet months. The copra drier on the other hand, was developed when the need for an efficient drier in the coconut field was recognized. The solar crop drier was developed when the importance of non-conventional energy sources was realized, while the arrowroot rasper came about when the shortage of labor for processing the arrow root into starch was evident. The main constraint/consideration in the use of the machines was the operating cost. Other considerations were the quality of the processed product and the time spent in operating the machine. The relationship among the designers, farmers and manufacturers was more on information exchange while the second type of working relationship provided the designer-inventor with feedback information related to the performance and durability of the machines
