Insect resistance: wheat varietal improvement
General Note
College, Laguna: UPLB, 1988. 23p. -(UPLB-PCARRD- ASSP Proj. No. 89-298-21; Study 6)
Summary, Etc.
The field reaction of wheat accessions to major insect pests was studied for five years at the UPLB Central Experiment Station. The most common pests observed were seedling maggot, semi-looper, leaf miner and earworm. Insect pest density was low during early seedling stage. It increased gradually and peaked 65 DAE (days after emergence), then decreased as the crop matured. The population peak coincided with the mid-vegetative and early reproductive stages of wheat. Confirmatory cage tests also evaluated the resistance of selected promising lines to earworm by sowing test seeds in a 1 m row, replicated thrice, after which, earworm adults reared in the laboratory were released at the crop fruiting stage. Different responses of the test lines were observed. The population of the insect pests, except that of the leaf miners were generally low. There were no significant differences in the yield obtained in all treatments
