Title StatementBlack layer in relation to germination and yield at different stages of maturity in corn
General NoteIlagan, Isabela: BPI, 1977. 22p
Summary, Etc.The experiment used seven corn varieties germinated using ragdoll and pot methods to find out the germination percentage of the different varieties. Four successive stages of corn kernel maturity were tested namely 25, 30, 35 and 40 days after silking (DAS). The experiment was repeated three times from 1974-75 to 1975-76. During the first trial, four out of seven varieties showed relatively poor germination rate of less than 90% at 25 DAS. Rates ranged from 93 to 99.75% at 30 to 40 DAS. No significant variation was noted between varieties, kernel maturity and germination in the succeeding trials. Black layers which indicate physiological maturity of corn kernel were observed 30 to 35 DAS. Black layer formation increased as corn ears grew older. Similarly, grain yield in tons per hectare incresed with an increase in number of DAS. Yield significantly differed at 25 and 30 DAS with five percent yield increase. From 30 to 40 DAS the increase in yield was significant. Corn could already be harvested at 35 DAS, thus the field could be utilized for other cash crop
