Title StatementLearning Environments of Selected Health Science Classes in University of the Philippines Manila
Physical Description31-43
Summary, Etc.This study described the learning environments of selected classes in the Colleges of Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy of UP Manila. The data collection tool was the learning environment scale (LES) developed by Rivera (1998). This questionnaire was administered to two classes in the year level 3 of each of the three colleges. The LES consists of 63 statements which respondents used to described their classes. The statements represent seven factors, namely 1) student interest, 2) teacher support, 3) fairness and clarity of rules and tasks, 4) teacher encouragement, 5) student participation, 6) classroom ventilation and 7) classroom space. The class mean rating for each factor was used as indicator of student's rating of their classes. Among the factors, classroom ventilation was rated very high; classroom space, teacher encouragement, fairness and clarify of rules and tasks and teacher support were rated high and student participation and interest were rated moderate. On the whole, students rated the class environment favorably. There are variations in the class environment from college to college and from class to class. the College of Dentistry had the highest rating while the P1 (Pharm109-C) had the highest rating among classes. This research provided evidence that the students in this study perceive their environment as favorable to learning. The physical environment of the classes and their teachers were actually better than the impression given in some studies. Suggestions for further research include: feedback be given to the faculty and studies be carried out in more classes and in other colleges
