Active filters enable color imaging

Summary, Etc.
A variety of technologies have been used for spectral filtering, including birefringent filters, dye absorption filters, acousto-optic tunable filters, and Fabry-Perot filters. This article discusses birefringent and dye absorption filters, which are most often used for imaging applications. Generally, the required manufacturing tolerances for acousto-optic and Fabry-Perot filters preclude economical volume production and have restricted these devices to apertures too small for use in imaging systems
