Title StatementSome experiments in short-range numerical weather prediction in the tropical pacific
Physical Description122p. illus., figures
Summary, Etc.A multi-level semi-implicit primitive equation model for regional numerical weather prediction in the Tropical Pacific is presented. Energy sources and sinks are not included in the formulation as it is contended that they are of secondary importance in the short-range forecasting of large synoptic-scale motions in the Tropics. Four methods of computing the streamfunctions from the observed wind field are discussed and evaluated. The streamfunctions resulting from two of these methods and the corresponding sets of initially balanced geopotential fields obtained through the solution of the reverse balance equation are used in the experimental integrations of the model. Two types of lateral boundary conditions are tested in the experiments. In both experiments, inertia-gravitational oscillations are controlled without explicit or implicit smoothing of the variables at the boundaries. Moderately successful 24-and 48-hr wind forecasts are obtained from the two experiments with the model. Finally, the same initial data are used in the integration of the model described by Krishnamurti et al. (1972) which includes the parameterization of cumulus convection and other "physical processses" in the formulation. The resulting 24-and 48-hr wind forecasts are comparable to the results of the previous two experiments
