$aThe effects of bleaches on the finishing quality of coconut and tangile lumber materials for furniture and furniture components were studied using ten bleaching solutions. Brightness/whiteness of the bleached material was observed in all the treatments. Treatments 1 and 2 (commercial bleaches) exhibited the highest value in whiteness. However, these bleaches effected brittleness on the applied lacquer and lowered resistance to scraping by outside force. Treatment 6 (one application each of 10% chlorine water, 5% sodium hydroxide, 10% calcium hypochlorite and 2% hydrogen peroxide) ranked third as best whitening agent among the ten solutions. Treatment 5 (two-stage application of 10% sodium hypochlorite and 1 application each of 5% sodium hydoxide, 2% magnesium sulfate and 2% hydrogen peroxide) could also be recommended for bleaching since it has the least ill effect on the finishes applied, though it has a lower whiteness/brightness value.
