Survey and identification of insect pests of vegetable under Central Luzon conditions
General Note
Munoz, Nueva Ecija: CLSU, 1985. 19p
Summary, Etc.
A systematic survey and monitoring of the different insect pests of selected vegetables was conducted and classified into major, minor or occasional pests based on abundance, type and extent of damage. Survey and monitoring were done at weekly intervals and taken from 25 sample plants using the criss-cross method. The vegetables considered were tomato, eggplant, watermelon, cabbage and cucumber. Two major pests of cucurbits, identified and considered destructive and abundant throughout the cropping season, were: thrips (Thrips palmi Karny) and aphids (Aphis gossypii Glov.). Green leafhoppers and mites were also observed to infest the crop. Thrips and aphids were also observed in eggplants. In tomatoes, tarmished green bug, tomato fruit worm and cutworm were observed but only at a very low population. Common cutworm and the diamond backmoth were destructive throughout the cropping season and were considered as major pests
