Summary, Etc.Particleboards from white lauan (Shorea contorta vid) and tanguile (Shorea polysperma) using urea-formaldehyde (UF) and phenol formaldehyde (PF) as binder were treated with 25% solution of American Wood Preserver's Association (AWPA) Type B and borax-boric acid combination at 5% concentration. Boards (lauan and tanguile) treated with AWPA, Type B for UF-bonded boards showed a final weight loss of 74.0 and 94.0% while the weight loss for PF-bonded boards was 96.3 and 91.5%, respectively. Boards treated with borax-boric acid solution of ammonium sulfate-ammonium phosphate and 30% sodium silicate showed a significant reduction in board stength and increased hygroscopicity. Both boards suffered from blows during the hot pressing operation. All weight loss values failed to meet the acceptance criteria of Basic Building Code (BBC) for fire-tube test of wood which was specified for a maximum weight loss of 20%
