Title StatementEsophageal fistulation in sheep and goat using locally-fabricated cannula: Increasing production and utilization of feed resources under coconut plantations
General NoteLos Banos, Laguna: PCARRD, 1994. pp. 37-45. -(PCARRD-IDRC Funded Proj.; 1.2.1)
Summary, Etc.Two ewes and one doe were prepared for esophageal fistulation. One month prior to the scheduled surgery, the animals were gradually adapted to indoor confinement and feeding. The animals were also dewormed and given vitamins. Feed and water were withheld 24 and 12 hours before the surgery, respectively. Tetanus antitoxin and long-acting broad-spectrum antibiotic were administered immediately prior to surgery. They were anesthetized with xylazine and ketamine. A fistula was created on the cervical part of the esophagus and a locally-fabricated cannula was used to plug the fistula. Post-operative procedures included antibiotic therapy and checking of the esophagus for obstruction at least three times a day. The animals were stall-fed using the same ration. The sutures were removed two weeks after surgery, after which the animals were gradually adapted to pasture grazing. The animals were fit for selectivity trials one month after surgery
