Case studies of marginal households in Anolon, Hindang, Leyte: a preminary analysis
General Note
Baybay, Leyte: CSR, VISCA, 1985. p. 131. -(VFR # 006; Study 3)
Summary, Etc.
Selected households from Analon, Hindang, Leyte were studied for four months to find out the socioeconomic well-being of the farmers, their problems, coping mechanisms, level of satisfaction and aspirations, and their attitude towards government programs and the out-lawed groups. The participant-observation approach was generally used in monitoring the details of the families' activities and the events in their environment. Findings showed that the families were generally of large size and had low income. They were mostly tenant farmers whose houses were made of light materials. Through the sanitation outreach project of the municipal health unit, some residents were able to construct toilets but in open areas and for a common use. Toilets were hard to construct because bowls were costly. Food purchase claimed more than 60% of the households' total expenditures. Majority were planting crops in every available area to prepare for food shortage. Education was second priority among the families. Some parents aspired college degrees for their children because they believed this could alleviate their present conditions. Dissatisfaction with their present economic conditions was eloquently expressed by the families. They took things as they come because they thought they were powerless to dramatically change their situation. Most of them expressed their desire for better roads, electric services and more waterpumps for their barangay but they considered it a government duty to provide these facilities. Scarcity of money was the primary problem identified by the residents. Also, lack of farm labor and farm inputs posed them great difficulties. The farmers were not fully aware of ongoing government programs but, they considered the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Highways as the most functional government agencies. Eighty-nine percent of the households sympathized with the dissidents because they believed in their cause. They expressed this sympathy by giving the dissidents economic support. Some, especially the barangay officials, however, had negative attitude towards the dissidents and their sympathizers. The municipal and barangay officials thought that the residents were no longer worthy of their services due to the latter's disloyalty. Hence, both the municipal and barangay officials had lost their interest in initiating projects that could improve the barangay
