Title StatementSearch for long-fibered hardwood
General NoteCollege, Laguna: FPRDI, 1984. 7p
Summary, Etc.A total of 130 Philippine hardwoods were studied for their fiber dimensions: 1) to find substitute for long-fibered softwoods; and 2) to gather basic information on their characteristics and suitability for pulp and paper manufacturing. The wood fibers were stained with Safranin O to facilitate their measurements. For each species, 100 fibers were measured for their length, diameter, lumen width and cell wall thickness. Only 50 species exhibited long fibers ranging from 1.60 mm for hangilo to 3.67 mm for duligayan. However, only 35 long fibered species were found suitable for pulp and papermaking based on Runkel and Muhlsteph's ratio. Paper made from these 35 species exhibited good strength properties. Other extremely long-fibered species like katmon, lindog-ilanan and mabunot produced paper of low tensile and burst strengths due to their thick cell walls. However, their tearing strengths may be improved. They can be used for blending with short fibers or can be made into paper products, like fiberboard
