Summary, Etc.Analyses of kappa, iota and lambda carrageenan showed that it conformed with the specifications set by USP XXII, 1990. Acute oral toxicity tests in male Swiss mice of the kappa and iota samples was 10.66 ± 100.1514 g/kg. Lambda when given orally to the Swiss mice at 15 g/kg did not cause death in the test animals, indicating its significant anticoagulant activity compared to kappa and iota. Intravenous administration of the samples was lethal while intraperitoneal route took 4.339 min for the blood to coagulate. Subcutaneous administration recorded a time of 2.73 min. On the other hand, lambda carrageenan decreased the cholesterol level of the mice after 6 wks of feeding while kappa had no significant effect on lowering the cholesterol level. Iota exhibited 11.68% decrease of cholesterol level from 4th-6th wk of feeding. 14.73-20.17% increase in weight was noted in the test animals fed with the 3 types of carrageenan
