Title StatementThe production of a coconut oil based biodiesel as an alternative for fossil fuels
Summary, Etc.The project aims to come up with a recipe for the production of an ideal biodiesel as a substitute for conventional diesel fuel. Biodiesel is made through the combination of an alcohol and vegetable oil, with the use of a catalyst to speed up the reaction. First experiments were conducted to determine the ratios involved. Samples with different ratios (by mass) were created and tested for their heating value and flash point. After getting the results of tests, the best ration was identified. By manipulating the other three variables, and maintaining the constant ratio based on the earlier test, the best alcohol, the best type of oil, and the best type of catalyst to be used for making the ideal biodiesel were found. After performing the experiments with three variables, the samples were then tested for their flashpoint, heating value and density. The sample that yielded the best results, when compared with the characteristics of the usual diesel fuel was noted and analyzed. Then generalizations were made. Based on the results of the experiments, the biodiesel recipe that had the best results was the one made with 90% (by weight) crude coconut oil, with 9.75% (by weight) 95% ethanol in the presence of 0.25% (by weight) NaOH as catalyst. Further tests, such as the engine test and the test for octane number test, were not performed due to financial constraints and unavailability of a diesel engine for testing
