Summary, Etc.
In developing applications that target more than one platform with varying sizes and capabilities, interoperability is an important issue to consider. To address this, protocols are established and standards are defined. For real-time multimedia streaming, the standard Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) can be used. Application development libraries for this protocol are readily available for desktop and for more powerful computing systems. However, despite the advancement of mobile technologies and handheld computing device, there is still lack of support for the development of mobile applications that utilize this protocol. To address interoperability in mobile computing systems for this application, specifically handheld computers, an interface between an implementation of a protocol for desktops and the mobile client has to be devised. In this study, a proxy that interfaces Java mobile clients with RTP streaming server is implemented. In addition, bandwidth adaptation is addressed by buffering at the RTP proxy and at the mobile node. In the implementation, RTP is used to transmit data between audio streaming server and the proxy. The audio is then processed at the proxy to a format suitable for transmission over User Datagram Protocol (UDP) or Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). The audio quality is measured via Mean Opinion Score (MOS), a subjective measure. The end-to-end delay is measured as well. The performance of the implementation is also benchmarked with streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to mobile
