Summary, Etc.Buffer species (tiger grass, pineapple, calamansi, coffee, castor beans, banana and a combination of pineapple, coffee and banana) were planted in three buffer strip widths (2, 4 and 6 m) in a previously kaingined area planted to sweet potato at Atok Benguet. The effects of the different vegetative covers on soil erosion rates were compared and determined. The mean annual total rainfall in the study ranged from 6.70 mm (January) to 538.80 mm (August) with an average of 219.17 mm/month for four years. Plots planted with sweet potato and calamansi as buffer species produced the highest surface erosion (9.81 cm) followed by coffee (9.60 cm). Control plots (no buffer species) gave the least amount of soil erosion (7.42 cm). There was a significant difference between soil erosion and the different buffer species. Average soil erosion as influenced by the buffer strip width ranged from 8.52 cm (2 m width) to 9.22 cm. (4 m width) with an average of 8.97 cm. However, the different width treatments manifested no significant difference on soil erosion and on soil movement. There was no significant difference between buffer species and width/size of plots
