Title StatementScreening of tobacco varieties for resistance to TMV
General NoteBatac, Ilocos Norte: PTRTC, 1982. 12p
Summary, Etc.A total of 37 varieties, collections and selections of Burley, cigar-filler and Oriental tobacco types were inoculated with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) at 25-30 DAT. Varieties which produced necrotic local lesions were rated as resistant and those which showed systemic mosaic were considered susceptible. Five varieties and one selection of burley tobacco resistant to the virus were identified. These varieties were Burley 21, KY9, KY 16, white and Niger Burley. There was no resistant material from the cigar-filler and oriental tobaccos. The resistance reaction of the varieties and collections was similar to the N. glutinosa type of resistance. It was characterized by necrotic local lesions three to five days after inoculation. The susceptible plants developed the typical green mosaic symptoms five to seven days after inoculation. The resistant varieties and collection except Niger Burley were already cultivated by Burley tobacco farmers. They can be recommended to the farmer in areas where mosaic is a serious problem. However, their agronomic performance should be studied. They were also recommended for breeding purposes
