General NoteBaybay, Leyte: VISCA, 1992. 17p
Summary, Etc.Fresh leaves of ampalaya (Momordica charantia) and ipil-ipil seeds (Leucaena leucocephala) were serially extracted with different solvent systems: Fraction A with chloroform : acetic acid (99:1), B with chloroform : methanol : acetic acid (49.5:49.5:1), C with methanol : water (1:1) and D with hexane extract. These were administered orally to different experimental animals to determine the active principles of local plants having anthelmintic effect. The four fractions (A, B, C and D) contained either of the following components: alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, anthraquinones, candenolides and tannins. Chromatography test showed that both plants were effective against roundworm in chicken, based on the reduction of eggs per gram feces. The LD50 of Fractions A, B and C revealed that none of the tested bird showed toxic reactions at 600 mg/kg b.w. However, two of the birds that were dosed with Fraction C of ipil-ipil showed difficulty in breathing but recovered two days later. ED50 showed that Fraction A of the two plants has potential anthelminthic activity with increasing dose. However, the percent efficacy of the tested dose is not as good as piperazine
