Summary, Etc.
But the number of successful searches at Marcfiche was affected by the independent variables such as: 1) its multiple access points through the multiple indexes, i.e., title and main entry, LC card number, LC call number, and ISBN indexes; while the NUC has one access point, the main entry, 2) ease of accessing the title index, since the tile of a work is easier to determine than its main entry, and 3) it being in microfiche form, it is therefore easier to handle or manipulate than a searching tool in book form and in a series of volumes like the NUC
The statistical method was used to analyze the data gathered from this experiment. The results of this experiment indicated that there is no significant difference in the time spent in searching the sample in either catalog. Moreover, that there is less time spent in searching these in the Marcfiche was rejected at .05 level of significance. The results also indicated that there is a significant difference in the number of successful searches by searching at the Marcfiche. The analysis of variance of the result of the experiment rejected the null hypotheses that the number of successful searches made at the NUC and the Marcfiche are equal at .05 level of significance. Since it is searching the LC cataloging data in Marcfiche that produced the higher rates of successful searches, then it was established that it is the condition that affected the dependent variables
These hypotheses were tested by using the experimental design. A completely randomized design (CRD) was applied to the experimental units of two hundred titles published between 1968 to 1976 and acquired by the Rizal Library for the period October 1, 1977 to January 28, 1978. They were chosen by cluster sampling. Six searchers from the Rizal Library staff who are with parallel searching experience and library science training did the searching part of the experiment. They were assigned to the specific searching tool at random by drawing lots. The total time spent in searching the experimental units and the total number of successful searches made by each searcher at each searching tool were checked and recorded accordingly. The data gathered determined the effect of the experimental conditions, i.e., the NUC and the Marcfiche, on the dependent variables: 1) time spent in searching 200 samples in each tool and 2) the number of successful searches made in each catalog
This experimental study also showed that successful search in the NUC was inhibited by: 1) title entries, 2) corporate authors, 3) foreign names of author entries (e.g., German names), 4) see reference entries that are often overlooked in searching because of their typography, and 5) the exhausting manipulation of the series of book catalogs. On the other hand, successful search in the Marcfiche was inhibited by factors such as: 1) its title index arrangement (being in sequential arrangement when many title entries are similar in some respects instead of the usual alphabetical arrangement) and 2) its being a new searching tool, so that searchers have to be more familiar with its many features to be able to use it at the optimum level
This is an experimental study of Marcfiche, a catalog in microfiche containing the Library of COngress (LC) cataloging data and the L.C. National Union Catalog (NUC) a catalog in book form also containing LC cataloging data
This study tried to establish: 1) that the searching tool Marcfiche would minimize time spent in searching cataloging data for the new titles and 2) that Marcfiche as a searching tool would minimize the successful searches necessary for the early and speedy processing of the new acquisitions of the Rizal Libary of the Ateneo de Manila University
