Summary, Etc.This study aimed to identify the active constituents of the alkaline hydrolyzed extracts from Sargassum. The presence and the structures of auxin-like compounds in hydrolyzed Sargassum sp. were investigated. These compounds were extracted with diethylether at acid pH, subjected to purification by column, thin layer, and paper chromatography, detected in p-dimethyl aminobenzaldehyde reagent, and bioassayed by the Avena coleoptile elongation test. Silylation by N,0-bistrimethylsilyltrifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) rendered these compounds volatile enough to be analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Trace quantities of about eight different compounds, including a pyrrole carboxylic acid, were detected and tentatively identified on the basis of their mass and UV spectra. No indole compounds were detected
