Ten grass-legume combinations were planted in 2 x 5 m plots in three lots to determine their herbage yield, and nutrient and botanical compositions at 45-day cutting interval. Persistency of the mixtures was determined by cutting or with the use of grazing animals. Likewise, three fodder tree species, namely: madre de cacao (Gliricidia sepium), katuray (Sesbania grandiflora), and dapdap (Erythrina sp) were planted along fence lines to determine their herbage yield and nutrient composition at 60- or 75-day cutting interval. Among the grass-legume combinations, centrosema, combined with either ruzi, stargrass or carabao grass could be planted to replace the vegetation. It could also be incorporated in the existing vegetation under coconut plantations. Each has its own merits as evidenced by its degree of adaptation to the vegetation, high yield, and nutrient composition as affected by season. The persistency of the grass-legume mixtures as determined by cutting, showed that there was a rapid deterioration of the pastures as they were subjected to successive cutting, with ruzi and stargrass suffering the most. It was more realistic to use grazing animals because effect on the yield and on the vegetation was clearly demonstrated even with limited number of trials. Carbao grass, ruzi and stargrass competed very well with other pasture species when grazed. Stylo could be planted in combination with these grasses in pastures utilized as source of soilage but for grazing. Dapdap and madre de cacao adapted very well to the conditions under coconuts. The two trees when cut at 75-day interval obtained higher yields without significantly changing the nutrient composition than when cut at a shorter interval, 60 days. Higher herbage yield were obtained during the wet season than during the dry season
