$aFive biological structures, namely sodding, wattling, bench-brush layer, cluster planting of selected plants and mulching plus-curasol application were studied for adaptability in stabilizing mined wastes. The effects of these methods on surface runoff and soil loss, and the costs involved in their application were also considered. Seedlings of alnus, guava and Benguet pine were planted and some grass species were introduced as plant cover. Application of sodding and wattling to sloping mined waste areas signficantly reduced the occurrence of surface runoff and soil erosion as compared to the control. Sodding gave the highest percent plant cover (100%) followed by wattling (91%). Alnus had better growth than guava and Benguet pine. After two to three years, emergence of invaders like Trema orientalis, Miscanthus sinensis, Eclipta alba, Boreria sp., Dosmodium sequax, and Cyperus sp. was observed in the control plots. Cost analysis revealed that bench-brush layer method exhibited the highest total costs, followed by wattling, sodding, mulching plus curasol application and cluster planting. The control entailed no cost. But sodding and wattling surpassed the other methods in terms of soil stabilization effectiveness. Parallel studies must be conducted on the use of species of grasses for sodding, techniques to protect seeding materials from devouring animals, and appropriate time for soil retainer applications.
