Summary, Etc.This study was undertaken to: a) extract water soluble and organic solvent soluble-materials from the barks of akle [Albizia acle (Blanco) Merr.] kulantingan (Pterospermum obliguum Blanco) and salingkuge [Albizia saponaria (Lour.) Blanco] saponaceous materials, b) isolate the saponins from the crude extracts by chemical means, and c) formulate saponin-based hair shampoo and evaluate their properties and compare with standard commercial shampoo. Kulantingan gave the highest overall percentage of ethanol solubles (20.67%) which contain the saponins and tannin fractions. Salingkuge gave the highest percentage of petroleum ether extractives (0.71%) and water solubles (8.0%). In all these bark species, the ethanol solubles ranged from 23.23 to 25.67%, hot water solubles ranged from 7.24 to 8.0% and petroleum ether solubles ranged from 0.41 to 0.71%. The crude extracts derived from the bark samples of the three species contained saponins, volatile oils, tannins, glycosides, coloring matter, reducing sugars and alkaloids. When purified, a light brown amorphous precipitate of saponin was obtained. The presence of saponins were confirmed by the froth test with persistent "honeycomb" frothings, positive hemolysis in the blood-sugar medium and positive Leibermann-Buchard test. Saponins was not successfully isolated in its pure state. The partially purified saponins was sufficient for shampoo formulations. The experimental shampoo with 75 and 100% cocodiethyl amide (CDA) substitution compared favorably with the "gugo" commercial shampoo which was used as reference for pH and viscosity. The users were satisfied with the rich lathering and cleansing ability of the experimental shampoo with saponins, when used on hair and scalp
