$aTwo sets of herbicide treatment were undertaken to identify the chemical control strategies suited for reduced tillage in corn and sorghum. One set of treatment controlled existing weed vegetation before the crop was planted and the second set provided adequate weed control after planting. Results revealed that preemergence application of pendimethalin in sorghum resulted in effective control of R. exaltata but the herbicide was inferior to the crop at 1.0 kg/ha and above. On the other hand, preemergence application of atrazine provided adequate control of C. mucunoides and other minor weed species but poor control of R. exaltata. In corn trial, highest yield was obtained on pre-plant treatment of Glyphosate as a result of lower percentage barren stalk and higher stand count. On post-plant herbicide treatment, application of atrazine plus Linuron (1.5 + 0.75 kg ai/ha) gave the highest yield.
