Title StatementMethodology for evaluating agroforestry systems (MEAS)
General NoteCollege, Laguna: University of the Philippines Los Banos, Institute of Agroforestry, 1997. 12 p. -(P
Summary, Etc.With the vast array of agroforestry systems, it is imperative to have an initial assessment of the inherent "goodness". A multidisciplinary team composed of an agroforestry specialist, agronomist, economist, soil scientist and management specialist developed a methodology to evaluate agroforestry systems in the country. Several related evaluation tools like Agroecosystem Analysis Approach; Agroforestry Farm Assessment (AFA); Farming System Research and Development Approach (FSR/D); ICRAF Diagnosis and Design; and Monitoring and Evaluation System (MES) were reviewed in the formulation of Methodology for Evaluating Agroforestry System (MEAS). The indicators such as soil erosion rate and soil fertility for soil conservation, land equivalent ratio (LER) for productivity, net income, surplus, agroforestry system efficiency ratio (ASER) for farm income and number of adoptors were considered potentially sustainable. MEAS was field tested in two pilot sites for 10 and 11 months, respectively. These were in Mt. Makiling, Barangay Bagong Silang, Los Banos, Laguna and Pulog Hill, San Miguel, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. The dominant agroforestry systems for Mt. Makiling and Pulog Hill were multistory and alley cropping, respectively. Field test showed that the soil conservation measure in both sites was insufficient. Erosion rate amounted to 199 - 382 t ha-1 and 29-386 t ha-1 for Mt. Makiling and Pulog Hill, respectively. These exceeded the acceptable erosion rate of 12 t/ha per year. Consequently, both areas had medium soil fertility. Average biomass production was 1420 kg ha-1 in Makiling and 580 kg ha-1 in Bukidnon. The observed values were lower than the critical biomass production value of 5000 kg for sub-humid tropics to maintain acceptable fertility level. With regards to farm income, six out of seven farmers indicated that the system more than compensated the resources spent by the family in the farm (ASER=>1). However, the LER was applicable only in assessing a mature agroforestry system in a situation where monoculture is present within the experimental site. Otherwise, farm productivity could not be measured for indigenous agroforestry technology, social acceptability is no longer valid as indicator instead the better method of assessing is to document the agroforestry systems practiced and the local modifications of the system. The indicator for adopted systems should be changed from a fixed number of one adopter to a percentage of the social system considered which could be set to at least 30%,
