$aA total of 290 rubber planters and 11 buyers/processors from seven rubber producing provinces were interviewed to determine the prevailing marketing practices, marketing costs and margins, market flow and outlets and marketing problems of natural rubber in the Philippines. The provinces involved in the study include Agusan del Sur, Basilan, Davao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, North Cotabato, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur. Presale activities of rubber planters consisted of tapping, collecting, hauling, processing, grading and storage. Only the big planters were able to process, grade and store their produce before selling them. Small planters usually sold their produce in unprocessed forms while most of the large plantation owners sold their produce in the forms of ribbed smoke sheet (RSS), crepe, Hevea crumb, and dysat processed of various grades. Marketing investments of small planters were lower than those of the large planters since the latter usually processed their produce. The market flow of natural rubber from farm to domestic end-users of factories involved at most only two intermediaries: the processors and the middlemen. Market outlets for natural rubber included some 22 major rubber buyers and processors and some 45 rubber factories or domestic end-users in the country.
