Title StatementSurvival and growth of giant bamboo (Gigantochloa aspera Kurz) and bayog (Dendrocalamus merillianus Elm) as affected by site preparation, method of propagation and fertilization
General NoteCollege, Laguna: FORI, 1984. 23p. -(PCARRD Proj. No. 488; Study 2)
Summary, Etc.The effect of site preparation, methods of propagation and fertilization on the survival and growth of giant bamboo and bayog were studied using split-split plot design. For bayog, treatment A1B2C2 (with weeding, unsplit cuttings and 50 g/stock fertilization) obtained the highest percentage survival of 43.30%. Fertilization enhanced the greater number of shoots. Six shoots were obtained in treatment A1B1C3 (with weeding, split and fertilized with 100 g/plant). The highest height growth of 52.0 cm was obtained in treatment A2B1C1 (without weeding, unsplit culm cuttings and without fertilizer). For giant bamboo, treatment A1B1C2 (with weeding, split cuttings and 50 g/stock fertilization) had the highest percentage survival of 79.99%. In split or unsplit culm cuttings, high survival was attained when weeded and fertilized at 50 g/stock. On shoot production, weeding resulted in more number of shoots. This indicated that removal of competing vegetation around the clumps made more soil nutrients available to the growing bamboo. In terms of height growth, unsplit cutting with weeding gave the highest value. The unsplit cutting provided greater amount of reserve starch needed for height growth of culm
