Summary, Etc.A total of 150 farmers in three towns of Oriental Mindoro were interviewed. The study aimed to determine the recent farming systems development in the rainfed areas and to identify the different factors associated with them. Five farming systems were involved: rice-based, rice-livestock based, corn-based, fruit-based and coconut-based farming systems. Very little development took place in all farming systems from 1973 to 1983. Fifty-nine percent of the farmers realized the importance of diversified farming only in 1983. These farmers raised crops in combination with animals. Climate, water availability and lack of capital were the major factors that hindered farming systems development.
