$aDynamical meteorology is the mathematical theory of atmospheric motion. Its aim is to obtain and solve a series of equations for the evolution of the atmosphere based upon the laws of physics. In principle, if we know the initial state of the atmosphere and the laws that govern its behavior, we have what is termed "an initial-value problem", and we can merely integrate the equations forward in time to obtain the state of the atmosphere at any time. In practice, things are not as easy as this and we cannot adopt this approach to obtain the state of the atmosphere at any time from a single set of measurements. It is useful to go into some of the reasons why this should be so since these reasons from the main justification for our study of Dynamical Meteorology.
