Title StatementCervical node - Fine needle aspiration biopsy: A preliminary report
Physical Description18-21
Summary, Etc.Eight patients underwent fine needle aspiration biopsy and open biopsy of cervical lymph node simultaneously as part of the staging procedure. The sizes varied from 1 cm to 8 cm in size. All of these patients presented with abnormal chest x-ray suggestive of malignancy. Six of the eight patients had Class V (positive for malignancy) on cytopathology. When compared with the histopathologic reading of the open biopsy a diagnostic yield of 75% was reached. Only two of the six cases where a probable cell type was given coincided with the histopath reading. Problems encountered which perhaps affected the results of this initial report are: 1. inadequate amount of specimen 2. poor technique in preparation of the specimen on the glass slide in some cases and 3. expertise of the pathologist in interpreting the cytologic presentation of the cases The limitation of this paper is the number of population of subjects. The diagnostic accuracy of 75% warrants further investigation. Recommendation was given to increase the yield of FNAB
