Risk evaluation of alternanthera sessilis (L.) r. br. (family amaranthaceae)
Physical Description

Summary, Etc.
Alternanthera sessilis (L.) R. Br. (Amaranthaceae) locally known as lupo in Panay Island is popularly used by local folks who have complaint of symptoms of anemia. This therapeutic claim has been handed down from generation to generation yet, there is no report conducted on its non-toxic effect. Thus, evaluation on its safety was performed in mice and rats. The parameters used were median lethal dose (LD) and liver enzymes tests such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). The result of LD determination showed that neither of the test animal died nor manifested any sign of toxic effect even after a dose of 10,000 mg/kg body weight was given. The data generated from the liver enzymes test manifested normal values after 15 days of treatment. Results of the tests analyzed using statistical package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 15 showed no significant difference on the test drug in experimental animals Thus, the present study suggests that lupo is safe or non-toxic
