Title StatementDevelopment of control strategies against stalk rot of corn
General NoteCollege, Laguna: UPLB, 1986. 47p. -(ASSP-PCARRD Proj. No. 89-283-21)
Summary, Etc.The effect of cropping pattern on the incidence and survival of bacterial stalk rot pathogen was studied. Sweet corn was intercropped with soybean, mungbean and peanut and was inoculated with E. chrysanthemi that was cultured in D3 medium. The resistance and susceptibility of 67 corn entries against bacterial stalk rot was also evaluated. Artificial inoculation was done by nail puncture method or whorl inoculation using single or composite of isolates. Rotation of crops as corn with mungbean, considerably reduced stalk rot incidence. Common weeds growing with corn such as I. triloba, D. aegyptium, A. spinosus, D. sanguinalis, and E. indica contributed to the survival of E. chrysanthemi in the soil even when host plants were absent. A total of 20 and 14 entries were identified as highly resistant and resistant varieties, respectively in the different screenings. Further study on the effect of cropping pattern on the incidence of bacterial stalk rot of corn is needed. Isolates that could be used should also be uniform to obtain a more conclusive reaction of the entries to the disease
