Comparison of dry matter in vivo and in vitro digestibilities of different tropical grasses
General Note
College, Laguna: UPLB, DTRI, 1975. 7p
Summary, Etc.
The in vitro dry matter digestibility and the in vivo values of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum, Schum.) and stargrass (Cynodon plectostachyus) were compared. The metabolism trials of 45 and 60 days regrowth Napier grass and stargrass rainy season samples (28, 42 and 56 days regrowth) resulted to consistently lower values for in vitro. The 28 days regrowth produced the highest values, followed by 42 and 56 days that gave the lowest values. Fermentations using carabao rumen fluid produced in vitro matter digestibilities higher than those using cattle rumen fluid. About 72-hour fermentation period followed by a 24-hour pepsin digestion yielded a closer agreement between in vitro and in vivo estimates than a 48-hour incubation followed by another 48-hour pepsin digestion
