Title StatementEconomic significance of ipil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit) tree farming to small farmholders
General NoteCollege, Laguna: FORI, 1985. 27p
Summary, Etc.The study determined the socioeconomic impact of ipil-ipil farming to small farmholders (50 ha or less). About 158 tree farmers from the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Cebu, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Davao, Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte were interviewed. Farmers who planted ipil-ipil for leafmeal obtained incomes of P1,296.00 and P2,657.00/ha for the first and succeeding years, respectively. Those who planted ipil-ipil for fuelwood earned up to P2,903.00/ha per year. Farmers who planted trees for banana propping materials got incomes ranging from P10,800.00 to P12,150.00/ha three to four years after plantation establishment. Eighty-seven percent of the respondents were granted tree farm loan by the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP). The rest financed their own operations. Fifty-eight percent of the respondents reported that tree farming improved their lives. Major tree farming problems encountered by the farmers were inadequacy of working capital, high cost of labor, lack of technical knowledge, pests, unfavorable weather conditions, low price of products and absence of alternative markets
