Summary, Etc.Anyone planning to teach a BASIC programming course using Apple ll personal computers is faced with a problem in selecting an appropriate text. The programming manuals provided by the manufacturer are generally more suitable for reference than for teaching, and standard textbooks on BASIC programming describe a BASIC language enough at variance with APPLESOFT BASIC to lead to considerable frustration on the part of the student. In addition, such texts are no help in learning to use the graphics capability of the Apple ll, which is considerable and offers many interesting programs. This book is designed to be used as a text for learning to program in BASIC using the Apple ll computer. Like its companion texts, PET BASIC and TRS-80 COLOR BASIC, it is suitable for introductory programming courses at the high school, junior college, or universilty levels, as well as for independent study. The strategy of this book is learning by doing. Step by step, the student is led through all aspects of BASIC programming on an Apple ll. All examples are illustrated with photographs taken from the screen of the computer. Many of the fundamental programming ideas are developed with examples involving graphics, which has the advantage of providing a direct visual picture of what the program is doing. It also provides examples that will be useful for anyone wishing to write Apple ll programs in a specific applications area.  Chapter 1 introduces the Apple ll keyboard and the idea of string variables. The use of low-resolution graphics follows in Chapter 2, while Chapter 3 talks about the general nature of BASIC programs and the operation of the cassette tape recorder and floppy disk-drive. Chapter 4 covers numerical variables, arithmetic expressions, the Apple's built-in functions, and more graphics. The INPUT and GET statements are presented in Chapter 5 with examples, including the drawing of variable size boxes. Chapter 6 contains the IF ... THEN statement and relational and logical operators. The important topic of loops begins in Chapter 7 and continues in Chapter 8, where loops are used to display the American flag on the screen. Chapter 9 is devoted to the use of subroutines which enables the student to draw multiple figures of varying size. The READ ... DATA statement is delineated in Chapter 10, with a discussion of drawing bar graphs. Chapter 11 takes up the topic of arrays and the ON ... GOSUB statement, and Chapter 12 describes string functions in detail, with examples for dealing a hand of cards. Chapter 13 deals with high-resolution graphics, including the use of shape tables, while Chapter 14 explains the use of the PEEK and POKE statements,, with reference to reading the keyboard, animated graphics, and making sounds with the Apple ll. Chapter 15 describes the development of two complete programs: the Hangman word game and an Apple organ that plays three octaves of music on the keyboard. This chapter also includes a detailed example of how to use sequential disk files.04
