Crop growth and production depend on the interaction of a biological system-which is the plant or more often a population of plants-and the physical environment in which the plant grows. The total growth and production are in fact derived from the environment through the special mechanisms and properties possessed by the biological system. This statement may seem axiomatic but nevertheless it serves the purpose of emphasizing the importance of the physical environment in agriculture. In agricultural studies, environmental factors are often taken for granted or described only in the broadest terms, even though much can be learned from a full description of environment and used in interpreting such studies and often in learning how to increase production. Similarly, characteristics of the plant, or genotype, affect the way in which a crop will react to the environment, and this can often be modified by cultural treatment. To obtain the full value of any experimental study, careful observations of the climate and other aspects of the physical environment must be made, and details of the crop which affect the reaction of the environment or to the cultural method used, must also be observed. 0
