Title StatementThe physiological requirements of some long-fibered hardwoods
General NoteCollege, Laguna: UPLB, 1985. 45p
Summary, Etc.Tests on germination and nutritional, water and light requirements of long-fibered hardwoods were undertaken. Seventeen long-fibered hardwood species were used in the germination tests, eight species for nutritional aspect, four in the light requirement aspect, and ten in the water requirement aspect. The nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) requirements and deficiency symptoms of Alangium meyeri (putian), Panguim edule (pangi), Alangium longiflorum (malatapai), Sterculia oblongata (malabuho), and Endospermum peltatum (gubas) were also studied. Most species had seeds of short viabilities even when stored at 12 deg C. Seeds of Dillenia philippinensis (katmon), Mastixia philippinensis (apanit) and Symplocos villarii (agosip) did not germinate because of hard seed coats. Seeds of Nauclea orientalis (bangkal), Sauravia latibractea (polalabang), Sterculia crassiramea (taping) and S. oblongata were promoted even after two to three months in cold storage when treated first with gibberellic acid. For optimum growth, all species required high amounts of NPK. They also required partial shading of 75-85%
