$aThe text contains sufficient material to allow for flexibility in the length of the course and the selection of topics. For those students who have time for only a one-semester course meeting three hours a week, the authors recommend the study of Chapters 1 through 4 and selected topics from Chapter 5, 6, and 7. Chapter 1 introduces the basic concepts of probability theory using elementary sample spaces. Chapter 2 presents an introduction to discrete and continuous random variables and their probability distributions, joint probability distributions and mathematical expectations. Chapter 3 & 4 are devoted to a discussion of the particular discrete and continuous probability distribution that the engineer or scientist is more likely to apply in solving the various problems in his field of specialization Perhaps unusual for a text at this level is the extensive use of transformation theory in our derivations of the sampling distributions in chapter 5 and treatment of estimation procedures and hypothesis testing in chapter 6 and 7 can only be appreciated and properly understood if one has gained an insight into the mathematical derivation of the test statistics involved.
