Title StatementThe reproductive performance of gilts in individual and group confinement systems
General NoteCollege, Laguna: UPLB, 1980. pp. 1-18. -(PCARR Proj. No. 70; Study 1)
Summary, Etc.This study ascertained the effect of individual and group confinement systems on the reproductive performance of gilts raised from March to September 1980 using 16 six-month old commercial gilts arranged in a randomized complete block design. Certain physiological parameters of gilts like rectal temperature, respiration rate and pulse rate together with the microclimatic elements such as ambient temperature and relative humidity were also monitored in this study. Findings revealed that gilts confined in individual stalls were more efficient than those confined in groups. The farrowing performance of gilts and the preweaning performance of piglets were not significantly different in the two confinement systems. However, individually stalled gilts had significantly higher mummified fetuses and lower total litter weight at weaning than those in the group pen. Likewise, no significant difference were observed on the physiological parameters of gilts and on the microclimatic elements monitored in the two confinement systems
