Title Statement
Development of techniques for synchronized flowering and testing of pollen viability
General Note
Baybay, Leyte: Visayas State College of Agriculture, 1991. 67 p
Summary, Etc.
Four chemicals, ethrel, thiourea, KNO3, their combination, and gibberelic acid (GA3) were tested for effectiveness in synchronizing flowering in Taro. The maximum potential of pollen viability of taro was also determined. GA3 was effective in promoting flowering in taro. The technique recommended in the application of GA3 were: a) soaking the headsets at 500 mg GA3/L for 30 minutes before planting; b) spraying again 500 mg GA3/L unto all leaves at 30 DAP. Flower emergence started in about eight weeks. NPK application did not necessarily enhance flowering, except when GA3 was applied. Genotypic responses differed significantly. Results of testing on pollen viability were not so significant. Application of distilled water was sufficient to allow pollen tube growth in vitro. Pollen germination was too low. Study on improvement of technique is recommended to determine the minimum potential of pollen viability
