Title StatementAn investigation of the antibacterial properties of bixa orellana leaves
Physical Description15p
Summary, Etc.The plant, Bixa orellana (achuete), has been known for the dye in its fruit which is used as food coloring. Although its leaves are commonly used as an infusion placed on the head to lower fever and also as decoction taken after childbirth, its capacity as an antibacterial agent is not yet thoroughly investigated. In the experiment conducted, it was observed that the leaves of Bixa orellana possessed a significant antibacterial property. The active principle however, can be extracted only by using alcohol as the extracting solvent. The alcoholic leaf extract was found inhibitory to the four test organisms used – Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus sereus
