During a period of five years 16,394 upper gut endoscopies were performed on 3,813 patients with various abdominal complaints. eighty percent showed abnormality in the upper gut. The most frequent pathology seen were peptic ulcer inflammatory or "itis" type of lesion and malignancy in descending order accounting for 73 % of the abnormalities in the upper gut. Patients with peptic ulcer symptomatology showed ulcerative lesions in 59.8% while others had non ulcerative disease. Normal upper gut was seen in 16.6%. The lesser curvature of the stomach is the most frequent location of gastic ulcer while the duodenal bulb is almost always the site of duodenal ulcer. Majority of the ulcers in the stomach and duodenum are less than 2 cm. in diameter. Gastric and duodenal ulcers were seen to be multiple in 32.7% and 37.5% respectively
