Title StatementA comparative study on the efficacy of Povidone-Iodine vaginal suppository vs standard metronidazole oral regimen in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis: A preliminary
Physical Description51 - 60
Summary, Etc.Background: The standard treatment for bacterial vaginosis is metronidazole. But it is not well tolerated by sorne patients. Hence, the search for treatment with less unwanted systemic effects is warranted. Objective: To determine the efficacy of povidone iodine suppository in treatment of bacterial vaginosis Methods: Included were non-pregnant and non-lactating women, 20-48 years old with bacterial vaginosis. Group A received povidone-iodine 200 mg vaginal suppository once daily while group B received oral metronidazole 500mg two times a day. Both completed for 7 days. Estimated G. vaginalis, lactobacilli, and gram negative bacilli count; presence of discharge and foul odor; nugent score; microbiologic, clinical, and complete cure; as well as patient satisfaction were assessed after treatment. Data entry and encoding were done using Microsoft Exel and STATA 9.1 for analysis. For comparison of povidone-iodine and metronidazole between treatment-arms, chi-square and Fisher exact test were used. Results: Cure rates using the PVP-I vaginal suppository and oral metronidazole in the treatment of metronidazole s comparable. On days 10 & 21 of the treatment, there is a significantly lower number of cases with bacterial vaginosis in the PVP-I arm as compared to metronidazole arm. As for day 21, there were 64.3% of participants aim a nugent score equivalent for negative bacterial vaginosis as compared to 35.7% in the metronidazole arm. The amount of lactobacilli restored on day 21 of treatment was significantly higher in PVP-I arm as compared to metronidazole arm. In terms of patients' satisfaction, mostly were satisfied or very satisfied in both treatment arms. Conclusion: Comparable efficacy with the standard treatment and favorable patients' acceptability of povidone-iodine vaginal suppository treatment makes it a potentially promising agent in the management of bacterial vaginosis
