Title Statement
Cassava starch as alternative loosefill packaging material
Physical Description
23p
Summary, Etc.
At present, most of the world's dilemmas arise from a single unsolved concern: environmental degradation. The disposal of synthetic packaging materials, which are usually petroleum based, is a major concern. These materials are usually non-recyclable hence cannot be easily degraded. Manufacturing companies, on one hand, have the scarcity of resources as a concern. Furthermore, these components are damaging to the environment. For this purpose, an alternative environmental-friendly material for polystyrene loose fill is needed. Based on current and previous researches, starch does shed some light in this particular field. Most of these studies were done however on cornstarch. Through this research project, the group aimed to develop a way for cassava, a more abundant crop in the Philippines, to serve the same way or probably better than corn does. To create the loose fill, various ratios of cassava starch, polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and water for the batter mixture was used. This mixture was cut into strips then baked at different temperatures in an oven. The experiment yielded loose fills of various consistencies, shapes, and textures but failed to produce a product, which is good enough for product testing
